I got an itunes gift certificate for Christmas, and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for me? A song you think I HAVE to have? An album that's great? An oldie that you think I might have overlooked?

One of your favorites, perhaps? I'll give them a listen.

Thanks. :)
I feel:: coldcold
I hear:: nothing, presently
Comic Book Goddess: Brit Pack - Bobby & Marcus in colorrainpuddle13 on January 6th, 2011 04:20 pm (UTC)
My current favorites right now are Bobby Long, Marcus Foster and Johnny Flynn. They're worth at least a listen :)

FYI, Marcus is my favorite of the three. He has such a unique vocal style.

Cool! I've never heard any of them, I don't think. I'll check 'em out.

My new favorite band, Hey Marseilles:

tiny desk concert

Gotta love a band with a cello, a violin, and an accordian.

Thanks for the rec! I'll certainly give it a listen.

Can't say as I have any recommendations per se (as my listening tastes are pretty boring), but we bought a whole slew of Beatles stuff for Christmas, which is awesome. I bought Ian the Bon Jovi greatest hits album (he loves it when we do the few songs on RockBand) and it's fun to relive the 80's. Also we bought Roxette's "The Look" (also on RockBand and the kids love it). Come to think of it, most of the "new" music I find these days is because of Rockband. Hmm.

:D Love Rockband. And Bon Jovi was hanging on my wall as a teen aged girl. His greatest hits just came out at Christmastime, didn't it? I think it did.

I'll list some of my personal favorites, but you might want to go to pandora.com for ideas. Type in an artist or song you like, and it will play that song and others that are similar to it. There are occasional ads (like a radio station), but it is free. I've also found a lot of good stuff from Rhapsody by going to similar artists.

I don't know how far back you want to go. I'm a little older than you, so I love 70s music: The Commodores, Elton John, ELO, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Dan Fogelberg, The Doobie Brothers, Billy Joel (his early stuff), Chicago, Nilsson, Art Garfunkel, etc. If you like great vocals, pick something from Nilsson Schmilsson (Nilsson) or Breakaway (Art Garfunkel).

I also like Basia. She's a vocalist from Poland who had a pretty successful run on U.S. jazz stations (I mean, she even got airplay in Oklahoma, of all things!) in the 90s. She's got a great voice and a unique style. From the 80s, there's The Cars, Pat Benetar (her earlier work is better, IMO), Billy Idol, and Blondie. Don't know if you were into the new wave movement, but I enjoyed some of it. And if you like country at all, Keith Whitley, Ricky Skaggs, Joe Diffee, and John Conley are all excellent.

Is that enough? :)

Love pandora radio.

We have totally similar musical tastes, whatever the age difference. :)

Hrm - I listen to a LOT of Keane. it's hard to pick favourites -but I like "Something Only We Know" 'Everybody's Changing" and "Spiralling" and "Better Than This" to name a few. They're a piano band (for the most part) and it was mad fun proving to my kids you could be in a rock band without a guitar.

Then there is Take That or of course Bowie (like Sarah said - there is no such thing as too much Bowie). Or GaGa.

What a fun gift - I hope you have a blast picking out some new tunes. :)

Ethan was humming Bad Romance today. I don't own it, so where is the kid hearing this stuff?

The evil, snack bar having middle school, no doubt. ;)

I'll certainly check these out! Thanks!

Mumford & Sons. Hands down. If you want to download them for free, you can find their album Sigh No More at my LJ.

Florence + the Machine. Take a listen to Drumming Song and Dog Days Are Over to get a feel for her music. The whole album, Lungs, is awesome. If you just want a few songs, the two above are good, plus 'Cosmic Love', 'Blinding', and 'Howl'.

The Burlesque soundtrack is also awesome, but I'll be uploading that for y'all soon, so no reason to pay for it :D

I will whole-heartedly second Florence + The Machine! I am also digging heartedly The Pierces, Clutch, and The Fratellis (Brit-pop).

I am still loving Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as some Oingo Boingo.

I...have some eclectic music tastes. Is there anything in particular you would like, genre wise?
Carrie Leigh: C is for Carriecarrie_leigh on January 7th, 2011 03:35 am (UTC)
I think I have every album Ella Fitzgerald ever made. The woman can SING.

I like Duke Ellington, too! And I have a cute friend who loves Oingo Boingo. :D

Thanks for the recs! I appreciate it!

Well, I can never listen to enough of Lady Gaga, Muse, or Florence + The Machine.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are great, too. Some of my faves are Heads Will Roll, Kiss Kiss, and Zero.

Oooh, and Anya Marina. Her acoustic cover of Whatever You Like is total love, and I love All the Same to Me.

I would need a week to think it through and plan a list! I don't have a week right now so I'll leave you to it.

That said, I think fairly regularly about what should go on our 'funeral mix" (Landslide by Fleetwood Mac just made that list) and am about ready to share that with you for input/ideas. But that's been months in the mental making.

Ever see High Fidelity? What about the deleted scenes? One in particular called "The Interview" where John Cusak is supposed to come up with a list of the top five songs or albums of all time. What he goes through... yeah, I can relate.

Rock on, sister.
