Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. I do a monthy contest, don't I?
October's contest. Should anyone be interested.

I love Halloween. LOVE. Even though the politically correct part of me should say that my favorite holiday is Jesus' birthday, or the day set aside solely to give thanks, I'm here to tell you that my very favorite holiday is Halloween. Costumes? Candy? Dressing up? Going to parties? Punch that steams served from a cauldron? What's not to love?

So in the spirit of all hallow's eve, the winners of this month's contest will have to write a story about the holiday. In whatever fashion you like, with whatever pairings you see fit. My favorites are the following:

Bones: Booth/Brennan
NCIS: Tony/Ziva
HP: Draco/Ginny, Pansy/Ron
Firefly: River/Jayne, Malcolm/Inara
Supernatural: (Brother fic is fine...but no slash, please)
True Blood: Eric/Sookie, Hoyt/Jessica
Castle: Castle/Beckett
Twilight: Jasper/Alice, Emmett/Rosalie
Friday Night Lights: Any ship. I'm not picky.
Vampire Diaries: Damon/Elena

But those are just a jumping off point. Other pairings and even original fiction are good, too. I just enjoy a well written story.

First and second place will receive one of these cute Vera Bradley covered mugs for all your wintertime hot beverages:

Night and Day

Blue Rhapsody

And if there's a third place, they'll get something cool, too.

Okay, friend's list! Ready? Set? Write!
I am:: the settee
I feel:: calmcalm
I hear:: Monsters vs. Aliens

Hrm. I wrote a Halloween fic for samhain_smut, but it's an anonymous fest and the reveals won't go up until the first week of October...

Might still show it to you, though. It's blatantly obvious I wrote it, lol.

I <3 Halloween, too! :D

I'm gonna attempt October's!

I just had no muse last month

Oooooo! Genius. I love those and could totally use one at work!! If I fail, I might just have to get one for myself. I can just imagine one with something sweet, hot, and pumpkin flavored...

Not that I'll ever be able to manage more than one, but do you have a limit on how many fics a person is allowed to submit?
Carrie Leighcarrie_leigh on October 11th, 2010 01:32 pm (UTC)
Nope, no limit!
O Demanding One: Halloween: HeyursInTheSpiderWebheyurs on October 11th, 2010 02:40 pm (UTC)

OK, you know I don't write like you guys, but I do have a little something that is Halloween-y that I did. :D When I get home I will send it. Who knows, maybe you will like it!

Leigh: Castleleigh_adams on October 27th, 2010 01:43 am (UTC)
Sooo... not to spam, but you said there was no limit to how many times we could enter. If you hate them, though, feel free to disregard. :*

This one's not really Halloween-y, but the song I used is a nice, haunting song- and it's got a werewolf, so a few points for that? Howl.

The other one's my entry for this week's dg_ldws. It's pretty graphic, though, so I might not submit. But I'll post it on Saturday after the results and decide then. :*

<3 Halloween!

Oh this is just. WOO. Excellent stuff (and one of my favorite songs to boot)!

Leigh: Lupin/Tonks kissleigh_adams on November 12th, 2010 04:14 am (UTC)
Meant to reply to this earlier. >.< Fail, Leigh.

Thank you! The first time I heard that song (one of my faves, too!), it was like, "MUST WRITE FIC."

filia_umbrae on October 27th, 2010 02:38 am (UTC)
Hrrrrm. Do you have a preference between Castle/Beckett and Bones/Booth this month?
Carrie Leigh: castlecarrie_leigh on October 27th, 2010 02:55 am (UTC)
Castle/Beckett, I think!

Monster Mash (Part 1)
Oh, girl. This thing. I will apologize if this makes no sense. /: First Castle/Beckett attempt I've done, and I think it shows, but please enjoy, regardless!

Part One:

She would be lying if she said that she'd never thought about how she was going to die. In her line of work, it was bound to feature prominently in her dreams, to dance around the forefront of her mind. She'd gone through most of the usual ones at some point or another; single gunshot wound to the head, or the heart, jumped in a back alley and stabbed to death, mugging gone wrong, car accident, bike accident late one night in the rain...pit of spikes, crocodiles, drowning in Jello. Perhaps those last ones were more the product of an overactive imagination, and too many late nights spent reading and watching horror movies. She'd been old, she'd been young. She had died alone, with her father, with her mother. With him, though she would never in a million years tell him that. She didn't think that she could stand the look he'd give her--two parts smug, one part puppy-eyed speculation.

She'd even thought he'd be the death of her. Looks like that might not end up being far from the truth.

It started, as these things do, with a murder, a bet, and the advent of Halloween. Beckett both loved and loathed the holiday, though it was days like today where the scale tipped heavily toward "loathe." The precinct was holding a party, and the Captain had made it clear that everyone was expected, in costume. Ryan and Esposito had been cooking up something for weeks that had them acting positively giddy. Castle was cackling at every opportunity, and Lanie was giving her far too many speculative looks for her tastes.

When the call came in about a John Doe found uptown, upside down in a tree, she was only briefly ashamed of the sigh of relief that escaped. She was desperate enough to avoid the upcoming party that even the prospect of a murder investigation was starting to look good.

Beckett started to rethink her assessment when Lanie looked up from the victim with a twisted grin, and told Castle that he was, "really going to like this one."

"Oooh?" She can tell he's intrigued, shifting from foot to foot, sipping his coffee.

"I hate to say this, but it looks like our vic was...scared to death."

"Scared to death?" Castle had gone from intrigued to positively gleeful at this pronouncement.

"Have a little respect for the dead, Castle." He made a little whining noise.

"But Beckett! It's almost Halloween! This is classic. Imagine it! A mad man, on the edge...he lurks in the shadows, his psychosis driving him to instill paralyzing fear in his victims. He preys on their fears, their weaknesses. Plays with them. He drives them as mad as he is until finally? Finally he breaks them, and their hearts burst from the sheer terror." The look she gives him is skeptical at best. As far as theories go, he's had better.

"You know, that may not be far off," Lanie pipes up. "I can't be sure yet, but this is a very young man who appears to have died from a heart attack. I'll need to do an autopsy, but--"

"Right. Let us know what you find out." Lanie nods.

"Sure thing. We still on for Friday?" Beckett thinks she does an admirable job of not wincing, but judging from the look Castle's giving her, she could very well be mistaken.

"Oh? What's this Friday?"

"None of your business, Castle." She doesn't miss the grin Lanie shoots him.

"Girls' night, little man. And shopping."

"Costume shopping, perhaps?" He's looking far too interested for her tastes.

"Don't answer that, Lanie." The coroner grins at Castle and mouthes, "Later."

Monster Mash (Part 2)
Castle's far more thrilled than any man ought to be when Lanie discovers the needle mark in the man's carotid artery, and the presence of an abnormal amount of epinephrine in his system.

"See," he looks smug. "Scared. To. Death."

"That isn't proof, Castle."

"It isn't not proof, either." She sighed heavily.

"Moving on. Ryan and Esposito got a match; the vic's prints were in the system. Vic's name is Noel Jackson, 24. Small time perp, big on B&E. Just got out of the correctional facility a few days ago. Apparently, he missed his appointment with his parole officer this morning."

"So why'd he end up dead in a tree from a heart attack?"

Her hands are starting to fall asleep, and though she can feel Castle's heat against her back, he still hasn't stirred. She tries not to think about the fact that it's looking more and more likely that they're going to die here.

Her fingers stretch out behind her, fighting against the zip ties. Her heart skips a beat when she feels the faintest brush of Castle's fingers against hers. She sighed in relief. At least he wasn't dead already. The knowledge loosens something in her chest she hadn't even realized was tight.

"Mm. Beckett?"

"Castle, " she twitches her fingers against his. "Are you all right?" He’s quiet for a moment.

"I had the strangest dream." She can't help the smile that splits her face.

"That wasn't a dream, that was the Halloween party, Castle." He sighs.

"Oh good, cause there are some things that I definitely do not want to forget about that party."

“I’m sure there are,” she mumbles drily. There are definitely parts that she wants to forget. Primarily the fact that they’d left the party together, and she’d gone off and acted like some damn rookie, fresh out of training. And taken him with her, to boot.

At least they’d found the killer.

Though she isn’t sure what that’s going to matter when he ends up killing them. His next words echo her thoughts.

“At least we found him.” He’s quiet for a beat, and she can feel him shift. “You have to admit that it was a rather brilliant deduction on my part that got us here.” She can’t help it. She snorts. Part of her wants to rail against him, and let him know just what she thinks of his “brilliant deduction” that got them in this mess. But she knows that she’s more angry at herself than at him, so she plays along.

Your brilliant deduction? I don’t think so. The way I remember it, I was the one who had the breakthrough here." He laughs, and it's strained.

"Why don't we call it a joint effort. You have to admit that we work well together." Under normal circumstances, she'd never let him have the satisfaction. But this isn't a normal situation by any stretch of the imagination, and she doesn't want to let another person she knows die before she can say goodbye.

Monster Mash (Part 3)

The day before Halloween had dawned bright and clear, the city air crisp with fall. It would have been a perfect day if she'd managed to get any sleep the night before. They'd found another victim, one Eddie Valero, late Friday night; same MO down to the tree and, as they found out, the adrenaline.

Unfortunately, they'd not found the body early enough for Beckett to avoid the trap that her friend had so cleverly laid out for her. She doesn't like it, but she's never welched on a bet before, and she's sure as hell not going to start now.

She doesn't like that Eddie and Noel have the same parole officer, or that they're fresh out of the same correctional facility, only a few weeks apart. They all liked the parole officer for the deed. He was the common denominator, though they'd yet to discover how he might have gotten hold of enough adrenaline to result in the death of two people.

And no matter how tempting of a suspect he was, no one could determine a motive for the parole officer. It just didn't make sense, and it nagged at her, even as she picked up her dress from the cleaners.

"You know," he says after a bit. "I really didn't think it was going to be like this." She sighs.

"No one ever does."

"No, I mean, really. Locked up in some storeroom, no one knows where we are. Tied together, and about to be scared to death. I mean. I think up this stuff for a living. Never would have thought it was the kindly old doctor."

"Ryan and Esposito know we were going to go follow a lead with the doctor. They'll know to come and look for us--"

"When, Kate? When will they know we should have been back? Will they even think to look back here? The doc said this place used to be a meat locker. It's insulated. They won't even hear us scream, even if they do check the clinic."

"It will be fine, Castle."

"I do like the tied together part," he concedes after a moment, and she doesn't bother hiding the laugh. "Speaking of--"

"I was...coerced."

"Mhm. For someone coerced you put a lot of effort into your costume."

"It was a bet. You can't expect me to welch on a bet." She can feel the smugness radiating off of him in waves. It's irritating, but she thinks that it's far better than despair at least.

"Did you have to go out and buy something special, Nikki?" She mumbles a noncommittal, irritated noise about the same time as the door slides open. They both freeze, eyes locking onto the figure silhouetted in the doorway.

Monster Mash (Part 4)
"I never wanted it to be this way." His voice is soft and kind, the voice of your child's pediatrician, a grandfather, the postman who's been delivering to your street since you were a child. It's a voice that begs to be trusted.

Castle thinks that he couldn't have dreamed of a voice more ill-suited to the act of murdering, and yet there's something so perfect in all its inherent wrongness. He knows who the villain of his next book will be, if only they can get out of this.

"Those young men were bad. They stole from me. From my clinic. They stole from the young mothers and children and the elderly, the poor. All for a couple of bucks on the street."

He's moving towards them now, and Castle can feel his heart begin to pound. They've been in tighter spots, hell, the doc doesn't even have a gun, but still he feels terrified.

"I can't let you put me out of business. They need me here. I help these people when no one else will!"

"Dr. Brown, you know this has to stop. I'm a cop. If you do this, you'll be a cop-killer, and you'll never see the light of day again after they catch you." Her voice is calm and steady, even though Castle can feel her heart pounding through his back.

"They were hoodlums, and they deserved what they got." He can't stop himself.

"What happened to your oath, Dr. Brown? Do no harm?" The doctor flinches.

"We live on the streets down here, Mr. Castle. My Hippocratic Oath was taken a long time ago, in a very different world. Where people wouldn't dream of stealing from a free clinic. Take heart, Mr. Castle. At least you're not going to die alone like those hoodlums did. Like so many of my patients will."

Beckett fingers squeeze against his again, and he thinks that he hears her whisper something impossible before the needle sinks into her arm.

"Beckett! KATE!"

She hears a shout and a shot ring out even as she can begin to feel her heart slamming against her chest. She's dizzy and short of breath, like she's been running a marathon, and she' not sure if this is what dying feels like, but she doesn't like the sensation at all.

When she comes to, his face is the first thing she sees, and she thinks that it might be the most welcome sight in the world. His brow is furrowed, and he looks more serious than she's ever seen him before. She's still light headed, and her chest hurts, but she smiles at him regardless, and leans her cheek into what is probably his palm.

"Beckett? How're you feeling?"

She meant to say, "I'm fine," but it came out sounding a little more like, "Mfuuh," which had him chuckling.

"Stay still and take slow, deep breaths. The paramedics are going to be here soon, ok?" She nodded, catching sight of Esposito and Ryan, still dressed in their own costumes, talking to a few more uniforms.

"It appeared the good doctor forgot to dispose of our cell phones after he took them from us. Ryan and Esposito tracked us down when we hadn't checked in an couple of hours." She cracked a sloppy grin.

"Tolya." Castle grinned right back.

"Yeah, you did. That's why your the detective, and I'm just your humble assistant."

"'s right." She could hear the sirens in the distance as he leaned down, his breath warm against her ear.

"I love you, too."

Re: Monster Mash (Part 4)
Honestly, I think you've got their voices dead on. I don't read a lot of Castle fan fic, but I've watched every single episode, and I think it's fantastic. From the plot to the characters to the horrific bad guy to the happy ending, I loved it all.

Congrats on great fic!

Thanks so much, hon! Your (spelled right this time, I can't believe that stinkin' spelling mistake right there sheesh) encouragement and comments are a serious ego boost, and I'm really glad that you enjoyed this, and that I managed to get the voices down.

I think I stared at it so long I was starting to forget what I was writing!
