State of the Carrie
We're well into summer now, and I've left town several times and have some thought-y thoughts I'd like to get down before they leave me, or are all sucked out by the sun, wind and chlorine.

Writing, once a panacea of escapism for me, has become a chore. The rpgs in which I write are 'on hiatus' for the summer, with no definite date of when they'll be back. I've started two stories that are slow going, but getting there. I like the premise for one of them very much, though I write a paragraph, get distracted and am a bit miffed when I return that no one has tagged in. I'm just out of practice writing by myself, is all. I've had a partner (or partners) or worked in collaboration with a group (like my playwrighting class) for so long that I have to figure out how to be comfortable with just me, again. And that's not a bad thing.

Having said that, I haven't used a regular beta reader in a very long time. I have a need for one in an R/P fic that may possibly be ongoing. I'm not looking so much for SPaG, as I've got a firm grasp on that, but for more a Britpicker and a content shaper. Someone that isn't afraid to shake me up a little (but kindly). If that's something that you wouldn't mind taking on, leave me a comment, if you would.

I didn't win an award at the theatre gala last night (big shocker). I knew who was going to win best supporting actress when she got cast. And really, I'm fine with it. More than fine, she deserved the win. And I say that without any sour grapes whatsoever. The evening was fun, anyway. Some dear friends won, and I was mentioned in two aceptance speeches, which was gratifying.

The girl that played Miss Mona in Whorehouse told this story:

"So Henry (age 7) and I were in line at the grocery store and there was a curvy redhead (who looked a lot like Carrie) in front of us and a little old lady behind us. Henry pointed at the redhead and said, 'Hey, Mom! Isn't that one of your whores?'"

I laughed. To be remembered by a 7 year old for a role I played is almost as good as receiving an award. :D

Also Nolan got a little squiffy, which is always a good time. As we walked to the car after, he said, "Theatre people are a lot more fun than the crowd I run with."

I have to agree.

The next thing I'm going to audition for is South Pacific (*sigh*) Mousetrap, and possibly, I heard through the grapevine, that the theatre's trying to get the rights to God Of Carnage (*excited squeal*). Wow. That'd be awesome. AWESOME, I tell you. Jeff Daniels and Marcia Gay harden were in it on Broadway last year when we were there. Mom saw it and said it was incredible.

In closing, we're going to the cabin in Childress this weekend for the plum picking, jam making extravaganza and the 4th of July. I'm actually excited. One thing about writing by yourself, you can do it even without internet access.

Have a great week, everyone!

I understand about the RPG thing. When I tried to work on NaNo last year, it took me about half the month to get back into a rhythm of being able to write two characters and not IM someone to tag. Taking a break for a couple of months and writing my own original fiction and fanfiction by myself got me back into my love of writing with others. I hope you well and that you'll keep writing. I love your stories, and also miss writing with you.

Aw, thanks. I enjoyed writing Blaise/Pansy with you. Talk about full of themselves, those two. :)

I'm working on it. I used to write longhand and then type, and coming back to that again, I find that I'm an even better writer that way.
Lauradream_mancer on June 28th, 2010 12:02 am (UTC)
I recently picked up Pansy, and went back to re-read some of our scenes. Their who's prettier contest was so much fun.

I've never been able to write longhand and then type. Once I write it, I write it. Plus, I end up writing just dialogue and then can't figure out who I meant to say what. Kinda sucks.

ON HAITUS BLOWS... for us fans of the rpgs, anyway. I still check hopefully every day. *sigh*

Very cute kid story.

Hiatus does blow. But if people aren't moved to write, you can't make 'em. That would just churn out a lot of crap and make the writers and the readers unhappy.

It's helping me work on my patience. :D always a good thing.

Sorry, Maureen. If it helps, we'll pick things up where we left off when things are less insane.

Hey... whenever you get around to sending out the May prize things, don't send out mine just yet. I won't be here in NC for most of July and won't have a stable address until I'm back in August. If this is a problem, I apologize.

What did the people around you do when the kid made that comment?
Carrie Leigh: Bunny winkcarrie_leigh on June 28th, 2010 12:05 am (UTC)
I'm so sorry, Ayla, that I didn't get it out sooner. I'll wait til your address is more stable. Let me know, okay?

I wasn't there; it was a story that she told in her acceptance speech. She said the little old lady behind her was scandalized. :D
Ayla: Amusedabitofayla on June 28th, 2010 01:15 am (UTC)
I understand that life can be a little crazy. Heck, I practically have to forward my mail there. lol

I've been writing longhand here lately. I just do better that way. My ideas are so... I don't know.

The one thing I haven't done seriously yet is original work. It takes a lot out of me. Besides I only write in private.

Ooo. Check out my new mood theme! If you want it check out the comments for my day 27 TV meme.

You know, I think that joining a RPG was one of the best things that could ever have happened to me, creatively. My first few attempts at solo D/G fics were terrible. I mean, just awful. But joining up with other awesomely talented writers helped me to pick up on things that I'd otherwise not have known how to do.

Writing alone is scary, I'm right there with you. It's why I started off just writing drabbles, which gradually evolved to larger fic. And now?

I'm writing nearly 5k worth of words about an angsty werewolf. >.<

*SMOOSH* You're going to be terrific at ronpansy_ldws, I know it! I will be happy to lose to you. :*

RPGs definitely help creativity along; working that closely with other writers, you can't help but be influenced by them.

I'm not scared, per se, just... lazy. Writing by myself is more work. :)

I'm thinking that ronpansy_ldws might help me along. I did the D/G ldws last summer, and it was a challenge, for SURE. I'm not concise. LOL
Leigh: F+TMleigh_adams on June 28th, 2010 03:21 am (UTC)
Dood, the drabble I wrote for this week's sortinghatdrabs was the first thing I've written in a long, long time that was under 200 words.

As stated Friday night, I am a wordy wench.

*snuggles* It shouldn't be a chore unless you enjoy that kind of Slytherin masochism. In that vein, I'll totes tag into our little piece - tonight, even! *snugs* But yeah... it's something else learning to write all by yourself. I'm actually glad I'm able to do it now 'cause you're right - you don't need internet access!! (Am just trying to figure out how to keep my computer charged while I'm camping ... >.>)

Anywho, *SNOGS*
Carrie Leigh: Carrie Dr. Whocarrie_leigh on June 28th, 2010 12:12 am (UTC)
No, it shouldn't. I've been flitting around fandoms, trying to fins something that makes me go, "Oooooh."

(And this wasn't a plea for that, btw, I'm easy peasy about it all.)
Elle Blessingway: Michael Corner Wolfelle_blessing on June 28th, 2010 12:28 am (UTC)
I'm actually all "Ooo, shiny" over VD right now (and the HP/VD crossovers I've been tinkering at lately). I seriously love me some Damon Salvatore.

(I know. I wanted to tag though, and think about posting, too!! We have a lot done..prolly needs some edits, but yeah.. I heart what we've done so far though :D)

Another play would be fun. I like hearing all the stories that go along with them. :)

Carrie Leigh: my twisted ever aftercarrie_leigh on June 28th, 2010 03:10 am (UTC)
I wouldn't be me if I didn't have a story to tell.

Writing, once a panacea of escapism for me, has become a chore. Ditto. I'm definitely taking a break.

LHM (hee-hee!), that kid cracked me up! ^_^ Good luck with your auditions!
