Happy Birthday, Ethan Conrad!
He's 10, today. Good grief. He's growing up too fast. I think I'm going to try sitting on him.

May 25, 2000, at 6:36 p.m., I became a mom.  And my life changed forever.

July, 2000  I love that hair.  Someone said that he looked like Ernie from Sesame Street.

Easter 2010

I just got home from the Elementary School awards assembly.  Is there an award for sitting through both ceremonies?

Just kidding.

Mostly.

Both boys got an Honor Roll award, and Accelerated Reader awards.   And various other an sundry things that may or may not deserve a certificate of recognition.  These ceremonies...  I know they're to recognize achievement, but I'm not so certain that mediocrity deserves celebration.  And some of the parents dressed to the nines, as if they were receiving an award instead of their grade schooler.  I'm proud of my boys, certainly, but I'm proud of their character, the manners, their sense of humor and the way they handle themselves in day to day life.  And there really isn't an award for that.

That said, have a picture or two, anyway.

When I was younger, I got an award on my soccer team for Most Yellow Cards >.>

Yes, I think the whole celebration of mediocrity is ... ridiculous. It encourages people to settle for mediocrity.

Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ETHAN!!! WOo! I wish him many, many, many more!!

Happy birthday Ethan! Wow, they do grow up so fast. My middle one just turned 7 last week. Good grief, where did those 7 years go?

I'm with you on the mediocrity thing. And definitely on the personal character more than academic achievement. Don't get me wrong, being intelligent and working hard to get good grades in school is very important but without good character, manners and an ability to roll with whatever life sends your way, what does that really matter?

Your boys are awesome because they have an awesome mom.

Aw, Carrie! Seriously, where has the time gone?? I've only been in your life for what, three years? It's amazing to me how much he's grown in that short of time. He's gorgeous and you are one of THE very best mothers I know.

I just adore the picture of you and him. It's plain to see the love there and it makes my heart happy. And you're beautiful, my friend.

Happy Birthday Ethan Conrad!!! I remember when that little fella was born...I was so proud of you!! Where has 10 years gone?

For the record........I believe we Kumpels started calling him Ernie, because the first picture you sent us of him he had dark black hair that stuck straight up! Then you send me a picture of this cute little blond baby and I asked "what did you do with Ernie?" :)

You are so timely in your post today! I went to Josh's 1st grade awards during lunch and felt the exact same way. They praised every child with a certificate for showing up, reading, attending field day and eating lunch! Maybe it wasn't that extreme, but it was about everyone going home with a warm fuzzy- not a true achievement of what they actually accomplished. Let's get real....Josh should have received an award for Most Talkative,Most Entertaining or even Most Tickets Lost in a Single Day for Bad Behavior!! ha-ha

I too am proud of my very social, extremely bright child that has great manners, makes everyone smile and enjoys everyday to the fullest!! That is a true accomplishment!
