I can't hold it in anymore!
There is NO SUCH WORD as "anyways."  And don't tell me it's a non-standard adverb.  That's a load of crap.  You know it and I know it.

It's wrong.  Use "anyway."  Or "in any case."  Just PLEASE.  No more "anyways."

Because if I read it ONE MORE TIME I'm going to spontaneously combust all over the internet.

Carry on.  :)

This makes me giggle. (Well, after nearly passing out reading the title, I giggled.)

Why did the title make you giggle?

So then how do you feel about "anywho"?

*tee hee*
Carrie Leighcarrie_leigh on August 15th, 2009 12:05 pm (UTC)
Doesn't incite the same need to scream, oddly enough. :)

Do you know I actually went back to my post and looked over it to make sure I didn't write just that. I'm pleased that I didn't, even though I know I'm guilty of having used that before.

I wasn't talking about any one person, and no one on my f-list. I've been reading fan fic. I guess that word's just a hazard when you do that!

OMG! I'm not the only one! That non-word, more than any other, makes me want to scratch my own eyes out *g*

Are you reading fic on holiday? :D

How can you tell? :D

i'm going to say that it's okay to say it in fanfic if you're reading HP. i'm just going by the AP Stylebook. that's the communication/journalism bible.

LOL

My pet peeve word is "irregardless." Bugs the hell out of me. The word is regardless, proving once again that longer words do not always make a person sound smarter. :-/
Carrie Leighcarrie_leigh on August 15th, 2009 12:09 pm (UTC)
Right. That's not a word, either.

Thank God I'm not the only one! I despise when people butcher the English language. I do it intentionally sometimes and make up words (because it amuses the kids) but when people use the wrong words because they just never bothered to learn correctly ... bugs the hell out of me.

I like Sue Brideshead's comment about "irregardless". I agree. And "dethaw" too. If you're going to defrost something you thaw it. Dethawing means freezing people!

Amen. :)

Someone told me to replace "anyway" with "anyways" in a fic one time to make it sound more 'conversational'. Draco was speaking. :(
raspberry_rave on August 15th, 2009 03:20 pm (UTC)
What the heckie is a non-standard adverb?

Hyacinth Girl: Doom Bunnyeustacia_vye28 on August 15th, 2009 03:39 pm (UTC)
There are many grammatically incorrect things that slip into common usage. Like textspeak or lolcat speak.

Anyways, I don't do it that often. :P

Ooh, I got a funny one. Years ago, I was in the ladies room at work, and most of my coworkers were pretty intelligent. One lady was telling her friend about something that she thought was ridiculous. She said - honestly, she said this: "I know, it's just the ridiculosity of the whole thing!" I had to stifle a chuckle. ^_^

hmmmmm

My AP Stylebook says that "anyways" is a perfectly acceptable word if you are writing an article/ literary piece to be published in the UK but it is not a word for USA style English.

That being said, i hate the word "anyway". it sounds like i'm dismissing people. LOL i always use anyways....... guilty!
