True Blood
If I wasn't going to hell before, I certainly am now.

I spent the entire day and most of yesterday watching True Blood, the HBO soft core porn TV series based on Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels.

God help me, I liked it.

First and most importantly, I'm more in love with Eric than I EVER was in the books, (which was a lot, by the by). I didn't mind the discrepancies from the novels, and enjoyed the actors' characterizations of my favorite characters. I especially like Terry Bellefleur, the war veteran with the flashbacks, giving these truthful one liners that everyone dismisses because he's one of the town's basket cases. And Hoyt. He's a sweetheart, huh? Even thought I knew what was coming, I enjoyed the journey of getting there, seeing everything brought to life.

I think I dated Jason Stackhouse, once upon a time. Could they have picked a better actor for that character? Seriously. That boy IS Jason. And PAM!!!! SQUEEEEEEE! PAM! She ROCKS. I want to be Pam when I grow up and turn into a vampire. :D)

And despite the fact that I don't care for country music on the whole, I have 'I wanna do bad things with you' running through my head in a loop. Yikes. My hell WOULD have country music in it.

Well, I deserved it. I watched 'em all, and I'll watch next season, too. I'll need until then to recover from hearing the f-bomb being dropped so much.

Wait. Is there going to be a next season? *goes off to check*
I feel:: coldcold
I hear:: Freaking Country twanging. Argh.

I've never watched that show, even though I get HBO. I've also never read the books. Is it worth Netflixing?

There's swearing and sex. And swearing. And then some more sex and swearing...

But yeah, I just watched all 12 episodes from the first season back to back. And I wish I could start season two.

Have you read the books? Because they're pretty good, in a mind candy, poolside reading way. I think it would help to have read them first. It heightened my enjoyment. I might have turned it off if I hadn't already loved the characters.

Well, I was looking for something to do summer reading. Looks like I found it, because now I'm intrigued.
Carrie Leigh: applausecarrie_leigh on May 22nd, 2009 09:59 pm (UTC)
Think of them as really good quality fan fiction. They won't change your life, but they're good. Heck, I own 'em all. :)
Elle Blessingwayelle_blessing on May 22nd, 2009 10:05 pm (UTC)
Here here! Mind candy can never be easily dismissed, especially with summer coming and all those hours of free time we all have (pfft) :D

Read Laura! They're fun *nods firmly* (though I think I'm behind a few books >.>)

Dood. I've wanted to watch that show forever. LOVE the books. Where did you watch? Or was it just on DVD?

The DVD's came out last week, I think. I saw 'em at the rental store when I was getting Nolan WWII stuff to watch during his recovery. :)

*nod* I'm going to have to carve out some time to watch. In between the wedding and the house and omg!life! XD ... But the ONE show I (attempted to) keep up with is over for the season, so I think I'll make a go of it.

Next season starts 14th of June - the day before my birthday. I'm pretending they did that just for me!

Couldn't agree more about Terry - he's right up there with my favourite characters. And Eric! *swoons*
Carrie Leigh: Chicago - happycarrie_leigh on May 22nd, 2009 10:10 pm (UTC)
They totally did. Happy Birthday to Carmen! Woohoo!

Eric! *squee* *flail* *kathunk*

*gets up*

ERIC!!!! Oh, BABY!

I lost interest in True Blood about two episodes before the end. *sigh* I really, really, really wanted to like it. I gave it a good go. I think it's Vampire Bill that turns me off on the tv show.

However, Eric and Pam remain awesome. Nothing will ever change my deep love of those two.

Lafayette is my favorite character in the tv show though.
Carrie Leigh: sock puppetcarrie_leigh on May 22nd, 2009 11:12 pm (UTC)
LaFayette IS awesome. It only makes it better that I know someone with that sort of personality. :D

I haven't read the books but I quite liked True Blood too. THough I have to admit I started watching just to see whether Vinnie (Ok that's not his name but the character he played in a soap here) the guy who played Jason, could pull off the accent without looking like a complete tool. The fact he doesn't actually own a shirt (or pants) half the time is just an added bonus. :)

I toyed with reading the books but they weren't at my local library. Is it worth broadening the search a bit to read them?
Carrie Leigh: Beautiful Womencarrie_leigh on May 22nd, 2009 11:17 pm (UTC)
I couldn't tell that Jason wasn't Southern. It wasn't obvious, anyway. :)

Yes, he does well without clothes, doesn't he?

And the books... I devoured them in about a month (there were 7 or 8 then, I think) at the pool last summer. They aren't going to better your life, but they're very entertaining. You could probably get them used for cheap at Amazon.

I loved the show and am so excited about the new season which starts in a couple of weeks (June 14th I believe). I've only read the first book, and I read it after I had already watched the show but I thought Anna Paquin is the perfect Sookie and Eric makes me swoon.
Carrie Leigh: SQUEE!carrie_leigh on May 23rd, 2009 02:58 am (UTC)
I wouldn't read any more of the books if you don't want to be spoiled for the show. It was really, really close.

And ERIC. Ohmygoodnessgracious. He's just so.... TALL.
sue_bridehead on May 23rd, 2009 04:43 am (UTC)
I skipped the spoilers part because I have the first book in the series. It's on my "to-read" list. My sister says it's very good.

Huh, I thought all Texans enjoyed country music. Isn't a state law? ^_^ Which artists do you listen to?
Carrie Leigh: record/Cassandrecarrie_leigh on May 23rd, 2009 12:07 pm (UTC)
I'm a classic rock girl. I love 70's rock, like 80's rock, As far as new bands, I listen to The Fray, Rob Thomas, Matchbox 20, and Dashboard Confessional, to name a few.
sue_bridehead on May 23rd, 2009 04:10 pm (UTC)
Ooh, me too! Some good bands, there. I like pretty much all kinds of music, except for most rap and hip-hop (and personally, I can't tell the difference).
Carrie Leigh: I'm old!carrie_leigh on May 24th, 2009 12:56 pm (UTC)
*snort* Me, neither. It's because of our age. :P

I am completely fascinated by the attacking snake in the opening credits, considering I am pretty phobic when it comes to snakes.

Jason Stackhouse is man meat. This upper body *licks lips*

I only laughed when Sam turned out to be a shapeshifter. A human, a werewolf, a vampire; one of them can hears thoughts.... Oh, SM, where else did you steal from?
Carrie Leigh: Pansycarrie_leigh on May 23rd, 2009 12:09 pm (UTC)
I had the exact same thought when I read the books.
maureenmaureen on May 23rd, 2009 02:20 pm (UTC)
I've been VERY curious about this show. Just ordered HBO... I'll look into it!

:D Hope you enjoy!
Elizabethlittlebit_liz on May 23rd, 2009 03:38 pm (UTC)
I really want to watch that show. When I first heard of it, it was like, oh great, another vampire show/movie/book/whatever, but I've heard it's actually really good.
Carrie Leigh: my twisted ever aftercarrie_leigh on May 23rd, 2009 04:45 pm (UTC)
It's definitely gritty and intense. And parts are really corny, but enjoyable nonetheless.
