What's in a name?
So.  I have a question for the f-list.

I've seen memes that have gone around asking "How did you get your livejournal name?" (When she first found my journal, my mom asked me if I thought I was the Goddess of the Underworld, and I was literally stunned into silence for a minute.) But I know lots of your username stories already. What I really want to know is the story behind YOUR name. Like for instance, back in the seventies, my mom picked the nice, old-fashioned name of Carrie, like the baby in the Little House books. Then, the year after I was born, Stephen King comes out with the horror book  about the telekinetic girl that ruins her senior prom because she'd had it with kids teasing her. (I totally don't blame her.  They had it coming.)  To make matters worse, a movie came out three years later.  When you do a google image search of my name, that awful picture of Sissy Spacek in a pretty silk dress with pig's blood spattered all over it comes up.  Ew.  Ew, ew, ew.

I was gonna link to the picture, but... GROSS.  Y'all don't want to see that.  I can't believe I just typed 'pig's blood.'

Twice.

Anyway, that icky pic comes up, and then to a lesser extent I get links to Carrie Underwood, Carrie Bradshaw, and Carrie Miss California, who totally pissed Perez Hilton off, bless her little heart.

Carrie means 'strong woman' I think, and is a derivative of my mom's name, Carolyn.  Her story is that she didn't pick it because of that, she just liked the name.

What I'm getting at f-list, is this:  Where did you get your name?  What's the story on it?

And if you're weird about using rl names, you can tell me your username one again.  I love a good story.  Please?

Love!

I don't have anything too exciting. I'm named after Katharine Hepburn (although I'm e-r rather than a-r) and Kate from The Taming of the Shrew. That second part isn't particularly flattering.

A better story is that my eldest brother, Kenny, told all his teachers that he had a little sister named Kathy while my mom was still pregnant, without having been told what my name would be. I'm pretty sure my parents didn't know what sex I'd be, either. He was pretty close!
Carrie Leigh: Carrie frivolitycarrie_leigh on May 13th, 2009 02:05 pm (UTC)
I'm a huge Hepburn fan. LOVE her.

And Kate at the end of Shrew learns her lesson and is a better woman than Binca. So there's that? :)
Sharlenemynuet on May 13th, 2009 05:38 am (UTC)
My mom was in the army before my sister was born (they changed the regs to allow servicewomen to be pregnant just after she had to take a discharge). She was good friends with a pair of twins who were in her unit, and so my older sister's middle name is one twin's, and my first name is from the other twin.

My Name: The story? Let me tell you it.
Nicole. "Victory of the People" all put together. Sounds super awesome, right?

Well, let's look at how I got this lovely name. My mother knew a boy named Nicholas, apparently. And according to her, he had the most gorgeous blue eyes in the world.

So I got my name from some random bloke that my mom thought had pretty eyes. ... I kind of feel weird about that.

Not a lady at all: wordy: cosmo-jennycosmo_jenny on May 13th, 2009 08:28 am (UTC)
My real name is Jeannette, in honors of my paternal grandmother.
Her name was Johanna, my parents frech-ified the name to Jeanne and then to the affectionate form of Jeannette.
No one but my grandparents and my French teachers called me that.

I am Jenny.

I chose the username cosmo-jenny because I wanted to stress that I am not on LJ just for Harry Potter (a wise decision).
cosmo stands for cosmopolitan (not the magazine).

Lets see.

My Dad's name is Gerald, but he always has gone by Jerry. My Mom had the bright idea to name me after him. Geraldine. Seriously. Geraldine Gerstmann. THE HORROR. She also liked Vanessa. *icky face*

My Dad took pity on me early on, you know, having suffered under the name Gerald Gerstmann, and suggested Jessica.

They both liked it, but my Mum grew up in the south, so it was a done deal at Jessica Rae because everyone in the south has two first names. Except we don't live in the south and again my Dad took pity on me and made sure it was just my middle name.

My Mum still calls me Jessica Rae though, especially when she's mad. And I never shook the G names. In college, my soccer teammates made a bastardized version of my last name for a nickname. 'Gerty' It stuck (because it's easy to yell across the field) and some people from school still don't know that's not my first name, or that the name 'Jessica' has anything to do with me.

Oh, and Matt calls me Gertrude. Apparently when I'm in deep concentration I only respond to Gerty (because seriously, I heard that one yelled across a soccer field for four years) or Gertrude. Don't ask me why. Couldn't tell you.

And now there's Elle. I don't know if I've shared the story, but .. oh, when I was about 14 there was an author I liked who wrote paranormal young adult books. Her name was L.J. Smith. Anywho, I got on the internet and found a website devoted to her work. You could join one of the families on the site - witch, werewolf or vampire - if there was spots open. I decided to join the Blessingway witches and painstakingly, as a wee teen, picked a first name. Elle. It's French and means 'girl'. So I had Elle Blessingway.

It, again, stuck. I liked it and it didn't belong exclusively to that fandom. In fact, there's no Blessingways in the books. It was just a fun thing that I never acted on again after my name got added to the list.

However, I got a name out of it. My first ever fandom experience resulted in the name Elle Blessingway, and my handle, elle_blessing (because the whole name is too long for LJ). A lot of people here at LJ only know me as Elle and I have since become phone/meet in person friends with a few and they call me 'Elle'. They know my first name, but it's how they met me and how they know me.

It's pretty much as much my name now as 'Gerty'. I respond to it and think of myself as Elle. In fact, the oddest thing is, is that when people call me 'Jessica', it takes me a minute to figure out who they're talking about. I'm more used to it now because that's what people at work call me, but for a few months I had no idea who they were all talking to.

My name (not surprisingly) is Tracy. I have no idea why my parents picked it - actually my dad did - but I know it's a derivative from "Theresa" which means harvester. Maybe it was my dad calling back to his farming ancestry? Who knows.

I never really asked my parents any of these types of personal questions as a kid (too bad, since they're both gone now and I'm curious), but I remember once being told that my mom wanted to name me Jody, which really doesn't go all that well with my last name, Jenner. (Maiden name.) Jody Jenner - my dad told me he thought it sounded like an actress name and he didn't like it so he insisted on Tracy instead. Personally, I've always hated Tracy, but it is fairly unique and in 40 years of living have only met 3 other people with my name.

Comic Book Goddess: General - Cyn Crownrainpuddle13 on May 13th, 2009 12:50 pm (UTC)
Well, I sorta have a complicated name.

See, my mother had every intention of naming me Cynthia Louise and calling me Cindy Lou (I'm so totally Cindy Lou Who!). Then my maternal grandmother, it not being enough that my eldest brother was the first grandchild/grandson, named for her husband and born on her birthday, no notnearly enough. She whined that no one ever named a grandchild after her (the first granddaughter was named Parker). So my mother, trying mend fences, ended up naming me Helen Cynthia.

It's a nice old fashioned name and I kinda like it, but it complicates things because I go by a nickname of my middle name yet everything is legally Helen. It has been a lifelong nightmare.

And I ended up being this grandmother's least favorite grandchild (she was a piece of work lemme tell you) because I was neither blond nor twiggy which was her criteria for being worthy. I was the only grandchild who inherited the auburn hair predominate on her side of the family (she herself was a redhead).

When you do a google search on my name Cindy Jackson all you get are hits for the crazy chick who's had plastic surgery so she could look like Barbie :P

That was probably way more than you wanted to know!

I got my name, Caroline, because my mother liked it. It was unfortunate though that it seems like every other mother who had a girl that year liked it too. Seriously 10% of all the girls born in 1990 is named Caroline.

But my middle name, Irén has a more interesting story. I was born through c-section so my mum was out of it for a few hours after I was born, so technically I met my dad before I met my mum. Anyway, when my dad sat with the newborn me he just decided that my middle name should be Irén. It's not a family name or anything.

I'm a little miffed that they didn't name me Caroline Constance, which is an awesome name. I had a great great grandmother who was named Constance. It really rolls off the tongue well (at least in norwegian.) So my daughter will be named Constance. If it will be her first name or middle name is up to how much my husband hates it=)

My name, like many others roughly my age, is Jessica. My middle name is Céline. Jessica was the only name my parents could agree on. (My dad wanted Guinevere or Gwendolyn. EW.) Also, it is name that works equally well in French as in English, which was important. The middle name is because my mom wanted us to have French middle names. Jessica Céline is a little fussy sounding, but my brother got Andrew Philippe. Hahahaha.
Carrie Leigh: applausecarrie_leigh on May 13th, 2009 02:27 pm (UTC)
Andrew Phillippe is a little unfortunate for 2009. :)

Jessica Céline is very pretty!

I was going to be called "Amanda" (my mother had this thing with As), but because I'm the second child, my dad wanted to name me. He wasn't here with my mother when she was going into labour, so it was a: "MY WIFE IS IN LABOUR? HOLD ON! I'M COMING! I'LL BE THERE! I'M IN THE CAR! I'M IN THE CAR! HOLD ON!" moment.

And there was a song on the radio with my name in it.

TA-DA. :P

I should probably ask what other names they were thinking of. I knew that my dad was adamantly against "Amanda" though.

My mother got dibs on my Chinese name -- it's not a phonetic "translation" of my English one -- but that's basically the standard: girl, kind/beautiful/insert-lots-of-nice-adjectives-here. :p
Carrie Leigh: cake or death?carrie_leigh on May 14th, 2009 03:46 am (UTC)
