Slappin' Ants & Stealin' Music...
I'm old.  When registering my age for a website, I had to scroll down (way, way down) to get to the year of my birth.  I don't like it.

Ants.  I abhor and destest them on a level previously only occupied by my loathing of children's birthday parties.  We've had the house sprayed THREE TIMES.  And yet they persist.  I saw one on the kitchen cabinet yesterday and he said, "Hey, you!  Make me a sandwich!"  This must end.  It's them or me, and I am one stubborn woman.

Fandom.  I have watched a glut of BSG in the last week, and I only lack the last four or five episodes of season 2.5.  Or 2.0.  Whatever.  I don't understand that whole delineation.  But they will arrive via Netflix shortly, and then I will commence with the Dr. Who festival.

Hubs.  Goes from fantastically wonderful to Giant Throbbing Ass (or GTA - my pet name for him for the first 4 years we were married)  in 2.6 seconds.  I truly wish that he'd pick a personality and stay with it.  It's exhausting.

Piracy.  SO....  is it wrong to check out CD's from the library and download them onto itunes?  Is that a mortal sin, or can I skate by?  I feel as if it's vaguely morally ambiguous.  Besides, they don't have any really good CD's, just stuff you'd find in the bargain bin at Hastings and wouldn't want to buy.

Food.  Sis shared a recipe for Roasted Tomato Basil Soup which my entire family oohed and ahhed over for the entirety of the meal.  It's going in the permanent cookbook, Em.  It was THAT fabulous.  Nolan used more yummy adjectives than I've ever heard.  It heats up the kitchen, but if you like soup, it's totally worth it.  You could probably blend this in a blender or a food processor, but I didn't as I own neither.  It was chunky, but no one complained.  My blender fell victim to a strawberry dacquiri accident a couple of months ago and I haven't replaced it; I'm hoping for a food processor for Christmas. :)

Roasted Tomato Basil Soup

3 lbs roma or plum tomatoes
6 Tbsp olive oil
3 Tbsp butter
6 green onions, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 28 oz. can plum tomatoes, chopped
1 1/2 c chicken broth
1/4 tsp thyme
2 c. chopped fresh basil (really expensive if you don't grow your own)
pinch of cayenne
salt & pepper to taste

Toss the 3 lbs. tomatoes in 3 tbsp of the olive oil & some salt and pepper.  Roast at 375 degrees in a rimmed baking sheet for 45 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Saute onion and garlic in the remaining olive oil and butter in a large stock pot over med-lo heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.  When tomatoes are done, add them and all of their juce to the onion and garlic mixture.  Mash with potato masher.  Add chicken broth, basil canned tomatoes, thyme, cayenne, and salt & pepper.  Let it simmer for 35-40 minutes.  Add 1/2 cup cream to it when serving.

Solitude.  School starts in 5 days.  Am giddy with the prospect of being alone every day for almost 6 hours.

Podcasts and Novel Length Fics.   Recording will definetely be easier, as I have permission to record In Vino Veritas by embe11ished, The Pleasure of Your Company, Over Time First Friends, My Anything, Primrose Path, and Our Winter.  That's exciting, huh?  The September Podcast is shaping up to look kind of cool, too, with stuff from rainpuddle13, mugglechump, arglefraster, kaygina, and mynuet, I think.  I printed out a post DH cookie with the name of 'Resolution'.  Does anyone know who that belongs to?  Is it yours, Myn?  Like an idiot, I didn't write the author's name on it.  60sfreak is deconstructing Deathly Hallows.  I can't wait.

That's it.  Have a nice day, all.

Scrolling for your birth year is not a fun game. I've played it myself, with a similar reaction. Of course, we're pretty close in age, as I recall.

As a small child one of my favorite pastimes was gluing ants to the floor. They'd come up through my vent and I'd put a dollop of Elmers on them. Eventually they looked like those glass paperweights with things inside them. It's not the most effective way to get rid of pests, but I had a good time.

Pirate away. Aarrr!

I'm still very squeeful over having my drabble included in the podcast. Beaming with pride, even.

Yeah, I think we're the same age. I think I'm going to quit owning up to it, but my birth year has a seven and a three somewhere in there.

My house would be encased in one big gluey orb if I did that. Artistically, I'm intrigued. Practically, it just won't work.

I'm already having issues with my birth... and I'm younger... so I can totally relate.

Did the ant do as you asked make you a sandwitch? I'm curious which direction he would cut it. I'm all about making the halves rectangles, but Jay likes them as little triangles.

YAY for BSG! I think I'm going to have to rent Dr. Who too... it's on television here weekly - but I've missed too much to know what the jack is going on.

What has Nolan done now?

PIRACY: If it will make you feel better you can make a list and I'll download them for you and just send them to you. We were worried (with Jay's job) that it was a big no-no -- but then we found out that since it's an American copyright law we're not even breaking the law in Canada. ;) It's morally ambiguous. I like to justify myself by admitting freely that if I adore a band or whatever I will totallu buy their new album... but if the music makers are going to only have one song on an album be good... then they deserve to lose my business. The best bands out there (like MCR etc.) ADORE online listeners and do special things to encourage the sharing of music. Yeah... I'm ALL for buring the discs you have. We have just over 11,000 songs on our computer right now.

Recipe... LOOKS SOOO good. Alas... I have a house full of anti-soup people. *growls at them*

School - September 4th... it's calling my name. I will join in the happy dance with you then!

and Podcasts... I'm jumping for joy over ths one. YAY! I'm getting Jay a digital recorder for work (so he can take statements etc.) and told him straight out that one of the prereqs for having it is that I get to help you out with podcasts if you need it... so YAY! ;)

Anyway -- what a fun way to start the morning - replying to your very fun post. Have a great day, Carrie! ;)

No, the little bugger wanted me to make him a sandwich. Freaking things think they're so superior. Make you a sandwich? *squish*

Husbands are... husands. Can't live with 'em, cant string 'em up by their toenails and let the ants have 'em. Everything's fine, really. Mood swings, you know.

I have a nagging feeling that I'm breaking the law. I dunno. I may feel bad about it later.

Yay for help on the podcasts! I think it would be great if you did a general rec list, with synopses and personal thoughts... perhaps for October? That one is Halloween themed, and I've got a list to request permission for the fics already. Any ideas for filler material with a Halloween theme? Do Canadians even celebrate Halloween? Sadly, I am not contenental enough to know.

You have a great day, too!

Podcasts...

He hasn't got the recorder yet... though I have told him he has to just go choose it and we'll have it shipped to us... so I'm thinking I may be of some help by Christmas... which is good - since I have about 30 favourite Christmas fics to reccomend.

We DO have Halloween here and I'll think about Halloween filler. I have a few ideas floating around... I'll think more at work and let you know. ;)

so glad that you and all your men liked the soup. i seem to remember that nolan has a soft spot for soup.

yes, it is illegal to download music that you haven't bought. sorry.

surely squirrles occupy some level of loathing up there with ant and kid's birthday parties. or is that a whole different level of hatred?

Em

Nolan would eat soup for every meal, 100 degrees outside or no.

I'm quitting. I swear, it just occurred to me the other day. Crap. It was a pretty sweet deal while it lasted.

Squirrels... my arch nemeses... behind dolphins and ants...

Yes, it was me. Unless you meant another cookie.

Right there with you on the ant loathing.

I refuse to let those little buggers get the best of me.

I thought it was you, I just couldn't remember. Another part of that 'getting old' thing.
Embellishedembe11ished on August 22nd, 2007 11:01 pm (UTC)
I agree with you about the ants. We have them too. I just keep in mind that they are better than roaches. That helps a little tiny bit.

I'm looking forward to hearing your reading of "In Vino Veritas". It will be a huge thrill to hear it come to life!

The soup recipe looks great. I think I'll try it if it ever cools down here. I am beginning to doubt that will ever happen, though!

I re-read it again yesterday to familiarize myself with it. I may be contacting you for a pronunciation guide to the wines!

According to my pest control guy, spraying ants is futile, because they never kill all of them, and the only result is that they move their nest over, so what you have to do is keep spraying to move them off your property totally. Of course, if your neighbors are doing the same thing then you get to start all over again ;)
Carrie Leigh: dark lord's coffeecarrie_leigh on August 23rd, 2007 01:08 pm (UTC)
I just got new neighbors in a house that has been vacant for over a year. What do you want to bet that they're spraying, too?

ARGH.
