It's snowy and I'm hibernating,
AND we're all out of Swiss Miss.

*shriek*

Luckily, I know how to do it from scratch. And now, so do you.

The cast of characters...

You need cocoa, sugar, salt, vanilla, milk, and marshmallows (not pictured ;))

Microwave the milk to desired hotness. You place 2 TBSP sugar, 2 tsp cocoa, and a dash of salt into each cup, stirring to mix together.

Then add milk to fill and 1/2 tsp of vanilla:

And whisk. If you don't have one of these suckers, get on Amazon and spend the $20 bucks. They're AWESOME. I froth the milk from my coffee and whisk salad dressings together. I love this little guy.

Garnish with marshmallows.

Enjoy!

And for 13oct , because she asked nicely for snow pics, (What? Not a lot of snow in Dubai?) here are a few.

Nolan came in all pissy from work last night, and I heard him yelling that he had to WALK home. Then I saw where he had to walk from:

Can you see the little black blur? That's his car.

Here. I'll give you one of him digging it out this morning. :D

Poor guy.  Better him than me, though. :D

Eeep! We just got rid of all our snow but there's an expected snowfall this Thursday. Sigh.

Thanks for the recipe! ;)

You're welcome! Aaron proclaimed it "Better than the packets."

Mmm, hot cocoa.

I didn't know you guys got so much snow that far south. We have about as much and I live up in the Canadian prairie where we supposedly have the monopoly on snowy winters. (That's what I was told when I moved here anyway.)

Enjoy your snow days!
Carrie Leigh: Pretty Pansycarrie_leigh on January 29th, 2010 05:45 pm (UTC)
We live in the northernmost part of Texas, in the panhandle (The square part). Also, the town is situated on top of what the native call 'the caprock' and that puts us at about 3700 feet above sea level. So we have seasons and everything, where those on south Texas, (like Austin and Houston) don't.

And it's not a LOT of snow, but the drifts make it tricky.
tracyj23: DW - Doctor - smiletracyj23 on January 29th, 2010 06:30 pm (UTC)
I hear ya. We live in the "wind capital" of Canada. (Also known as Chicago of the north.) So we get LOTS of snow drifting.

Enjoy your seasons. It's nice having more than just one or two. :)

Poor guy. Better him than me, though. :D

Ain't that the truth? *g*

I'm really, really going now. I had to comment though! :)
Carrie Leigh: Laverne and Shirleycarrie_leigh on January 29th, 2010 06:41 pm (UTC)
It's the truth. I stepped outside to snap the pictures and then went right back to snuggle up in a blanket. :)

Oh, that snow looks AWFUL! I guess I'll stop whining about 50 degrees being too cold here.

Woman, for all that we do have in common the cooking thing is not one. HOT CHOCOLATE FROM SCRATCH? You are amazing. I could never do that. Well, maybe I could but it would cost me 60 bucks because I don't keep any supplies on hand... I'd have to buy all the stuff. Plus, seriously, I don't think I could do it. I'm not much of a cook at all. Good thing I like take out.

I like it when OTHER PEOPLE cook for me, though. I'm a very appreciative eater/audience. When we meet one day, you can cook for me.

Stay warm. Hunker. You've got the right plan.
Carrie Leigh: Wondertwin power activatecarrie_leigh on January 29th, 2010 06:37 pm (UTC)
You could do it. My mom always said, if you can read, you can cook. Though you do have to have the impetus. There are things that I CAN do, that I don't because I don't have the ooomph.

And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to cook for people who love to eat. Come visit, and you can sit at the bar and drink coffee and talk to me while I make a meal. It's my favorite part of cooking!

I like the verb 'hunker.' I'm taking that and using it from now on!
maureenmaureen on January 29th, 2010 07:25 pm (UTC)
Hunker down, indeed. Run with it.

As it turns out, I love to sit at someone's kitchen bar and talk to them while I watch them cook. Maybe I'll drive out for a long weekend sometime this year... summer or early fall. Hmmmmm.

Do it!

Eeeeks! LOok at all that snow. Reminds me of our Chicago/Montreal days. When I was working in Chicago, my commute was really nasty. I had to take two buses and then walk three blocks in between then because there wasn't a direct connection. I remember trudging like this thru the snow on the sidewalk in Jan cursing and wondering why I was doing this to myself.

I sure don't miss the snow at all. Rather bake then freeze any day!! Thanks for the picts. Are there any pict requests from your end for me? I can supply desert views, beaches etc. Think warm thoughts kinda thing. :)
Carrie Leigh: Cowardly lioncarrie_leigh on January 29th, 2010 06:40 pm (UTC)
I adore the beach! Even though I have to wear a floppy hat and slather on sunscreen to keep from frying, because I'm SO very pale... I was impressed with the pics you posted a while back. I'd love to visit Dubai. It looks very interesting!
Comic Book Goddessrainpuddle13 on January 29th, 2010 06:41 pm (UTC)
Mmmm I have all of that at home...

It's gonna snow tomorrow. Hopefully more than you have...

*pats Nolan* I'd hate the digging out part!
Carrie Leighcarrie_leigh on January 29th, 2010 06:42 pm (UTC)
YAY! Snow for Pud!

It's VERY yummeh. Even better with a little half and half. :D

Tell poor Nolan at least his motherinlaw loves and appreciates him and I do so love when you quote me.

Re: i have 2 comments
I also quote "Pain for beauty," "no whining" and "pretty is as pretty does," quite a bit. :D

i'm gonna guess your version tastes better than swiss miss! mmmm

I have chocolate-y stuff today too! (check out my LJ.)

Also, so not jealous of the snow.
WolfStar: beachwolfstar07 on January 29th, 2010 10:49 pm (UTC)
That's useful stuff there. Is Nestle cocoa powder an okay substitute though?
Carrie Leighcarrie_leigh on January 29th, 2010 11:43 pm (UTC)
Absolutely!

Carrie, since I hear y'all're all cooped up, I am gonna link you to the best food website I have ever, ever, EVER SEEN.

I guess it's not really a food website as much as a community of people sharing food websites but...well you get it.

http://www.tastespotting.com/

Miss you guys! Stay warm! Tell the boys I said hi and Ethan to get well soon. <3
Carrie Leighcarrie_leigh on January 29th, 2010 11:44 pm (UTC)
Thanks, Cyd. I'll pass it along.
