A recipe so easy, an idiot could make it.
My mother sent me a recipe.  Forgive the double negative; I couldn't NOT try it.

1 coffee mug

4 Tbsp. flour

4 Tbsp. sugar

2 Tbsp. cocoa

1 egg

3 Tbsp. milk

3 Tbsp. oil

Small splash of vanilla

3 Tbsp. chocolate chips, optional

(An oversized mug)

Add dry ingredients to mug, mix well with a fork.

Add egg, mix thoroughly.

Pour in milk and oil and vanilla, mix well.

Add chips, if using.

Put mug in microwave, and cook for three minutes on 1000 watts.

Cake will rise over top of mug--do not be alarmed! (Do you SEE?  Try two inches above the mug!  I was glad I put it on the plate.)

Allow to cool a little; tip onto a plate if desired.

Eat!

(This can serve two if you want to feel slightly more virtuous.)

This cake is not going to win any beauty prizes, either.  I had a small nibble and think that it needs to be chocolatey-er...  perhaps more sugar and cocoa, less oil.  I only used 2 tbsps of oil, anyway, because I don't like the way it makes things taste, but that's me.  This is a surprisingly dense cake, and I topped it with hot fudge sundae sauce for Ethan and Aaron, who ate it ALL.

But they'll eat anything.  So there you have it.
.

Oooh that's just evil - seriously evil. I'm so tempted to try it right now.

Let me know how it goes. :D
Elleelvishly on October 5th, 2008 05:59 pm (UTC)
That sounds/looks pretty funky, actually. Quick and easy. No messing with making cake mixes and oven-stuff. :P

Thanks. xD
Carrie Leighcarrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 06:15 pm (UTC)
And it was FAST. Good for when you need sweet RIGHT THEN.

:D
Elleelvishly on October 5th, 2008 06:22 pm (UTC)
I just made it now. Haha. Damn @ fastness. I was watching it in the microwave...

I'm tipping it when the mug is cold-ish.

Cake Mixes?

What's a cake mix?

:-D

Show off.

Bugger, now I want to go and buy a microwave. We have lived without one for 4 years, and now I want to buy one just for a cake...

Carrie Leigh: cake or death?carrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 06:11 pm (UTC)
Ha!

I don't know how I'd get along without one.
Sharlenemynuet on October 5th, 2008 06:06 pm (UTC)
Hmmm. I wonder if you could prepare the mix in advance and just add the wet ingredients at the end. You could even use powdered milk and egg, so you'd just have to add water, oil, and maybe vanilla. *ponders*
Carrie Leigh: cake or death?carrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 06:13 pm (UTC)
I don't see why that wouldn't work.
Sharlenemynuet on October 5th, 2008 06:13 pm (UTC)
That'd be kind of a fun Christmas present, or something to keep around the house. A mug, a mix, voila! Cake.
Carrie Leigh: Chicago - happycarrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 06:14 pm (UTC)
What a great idea!
Sharlenemynuet on October 5th, 2008 06:18 pm (UTC)
Apparently you can even get powdered oil, so it could potentially be a just-add-water dealie.
Carrie Leigh: cake or death?carrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 06:28 pm (UTC)
Powdered oil?

The mind reels. I had no idea.
Sharlenemynuet on October 5th, 2008 06:31 pm (UTC)
It's how they make food with Omega-3. Although apparently there's also this thing where the chef absorbs olive oil into maltodextrin, then sprinkles it on top of food and it turns back into olive oil in your mouth or something.

Magic!

This might be the most awesome thing ever.
Carrie Leigh: Ethan and Aaroncarrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 06:29 pm (UTC)
The boys thought so.

Aaron actually asked, "Whose birthday is it?"

I guess I don't make a lot of cake.
Brendan: Alton Brown - Lightbulbbrendanm720 on October 5th, 2008 06:44 pm (UTC)
That's pretty cool.

Is that a 16 oz coffee cup?
Carrie Leigh: cake or death?carrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 06:45 pm (UTC)
It is.
Brendan: Sinfest - Chefsbrendanm720 on October 13th, 2008 01:53 pm (UTC)
Excellent.

I just so happen to have one of those.

It kind of brings the term "Cupcake" back to its roots.

That was the worst joke ever, and yet... I still laughed. :D

I admit to pausing at the '1 coffee cup' for quite a while. Longer than it would have taken a normal person, anyway.

I'm glad the boys liked it. :)
Carrie Leigh: Carrie & Emilycarrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 07:54 pm (UTC)
As if one might grind it up and add it to the cake?

You're sick, you get a pass. :)
Elizabethlittlebit_liz on October 5th, 2008 08:07 pm (UTC)
That's so cool! It sounds perfect for when you're craving something sweet and you want it NOW :p

I know!
WolfStar: confusedwolfstar07 on October 5th, 2008 08:46 pm (UTC)
You know, my family substitutes apple sauce for oil in our cake and brownie recipes.
Carrie Leigh: cake or death?carrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 09:44 pm (UTC)
I do that, too. But someone had eaten all of the applesauce! The nerve!
O Demanding One: Express: Happy Heffalumpheyurs on October 5th, 2008 09:25 pm (UTC)

Even though I'm not a chocolate person, this looks great. I could substitute with white chocolate and maybe be quite happy. *nods*

Carrie Leigh: Alphabet soupcarrie_leigh on October 5th, 2008 09:45 pm (UTC)
Oh, Urs. White Chocolate is NOT chocolate. It's emulsified lethicin parading as chocolate.

But yes, that might work. I'm all for eating what you like!
O Demanding One: Urs: Ursness :)heyurs on October 6th, 2008 12:34 am (UTC)

*huge grin* I know! Other folks say something is wrong with me...*giggles*

*hugs you* X)

I'm so giving that one to my girls to try!

Cake in a mug! I've always wanted to try it. It's the school holidays so maybe I can persuade my siblings to share it with me? Maybe?

Looks yum!
dL: rosedieloreley on March 2nd, 2009 05:48 am (UTC)

Daniel says, "Thank you for afternoon tea, Auntie Carrie!" He loved it, especially the bit where he got to watch the cake rise and provide me with a running commentary. :D

Not a lady at all: pic: choc heartcosmo_jenny on October 6th, 2008 06:38 pm (UTC)
Evilly easy!

Any idea how to do it in the oven?
(I don't have a microwave.)
Jandy the Gnome Whisperer: Mimejandjsalmon on December 7th, 2008 08:12 am (UTC)
OOOH I'm trying it right now!! I used Eggnog instead of some of the milk and good Canadian Tim Horton's Hot Chocolate mix instead. *crosses fingers*
Jandy the Gnome Whisperer: Celtic Heartjandjsalmon on December 7th, 2008 08:19 am (UTC)
It's good. Not THE BEST but very good indeed for those late night cravings... like now.

Now, for the chocolate fudge sauce!

Thanks for the recipe! :D
Carrie Leighcarrie_leigh on December 7th, 2008 02:03 pm (UTC)
I think if you replaced the oil with applesauce and used more sugar... *nods*

But no, I'd rather have a hershey bar, if I have a craving. :)
